3G iPhone

ChannelNews is reporting that Australia will have the World’s fastest 3G iPhone by Christmas.

The claim is made by a senior executive of Telstra, who said:

“We know what is coming we have seen the new device and it will be available on our network as soon as it is launched in the USA. By Xmas this phone will be capable of 42mbs which will make it faster than a lot of broadband offerings and the fastest iPhone on any network in the world.”

The phone is due for Australian release soon after being unveiled by Steve Jobs on June 9, however, the speed claims are nothing but hot air and hype according to Gizmodo.

Gizmodo claims the chip used in the 3G iPhone, the Infineon’s S-GOLD3, is capable of a maximum 7.2Mbps, a fair way short of the 42Mbps claims of Telstra.

If the reports about the iPhone in Australia are accurate, it will be available on any network, in which case this sounds like Telstra is trying to gain some publicity to make it appear as if they will have the best available offering, which may well be true, at a price…
